Image Competition

The annual Image Competition is held at Great Lakes PhotoMax. The annual conference is an in depth weekend of inspiring images and educational workshops.

Congratulations on making the decision to enter PPM’s Image Competition at our annual Photomax Event. This is a fantastic opportunity to put your skills to the test and to grow as an artist.

And whether you’re entering the Photographic Open Competition, or the Master Artist Competition, we recommend you take some time to go over the rules and regulations for each. There have been some updates to the Rules and Procedures for 2020. There are plenty of resources to prepare you to submit your best possible entry. And the rules are explained extensively below because we want you to excel! There are several layers of rules, and you’ll even find some handy instructions. Below you will find the 2020 Image Competition Rules and Forms. Please read carefully as you will need to register your images prior to the PhotoMax event (www.printcompetition.com). ALL IMAGE CASE REGISTRATION, LABELS AND PAYMENT ARE TO BE DONE AT www.printcompetition.com

Once again we will be accepting both physical prints and digital entries. NEW FOR 2020, PHYSICAL PRINTS AND DIGITAL ENTRIES ARE ELIGIBLE FOR PPM AWARDS.

This year we will be giving you a ticket for the raffle prize drawings!!! All you need to do to be eligible for a raffle ticket is enter a print case (physical and/or digital). For each print case that you enter (PPM members only) you will receive a raffle ticket. The drawing will take place 5:45 on Sunday, March 8th (must be present to win).

We will be accepting both physical and digital albums. Remember, this is not just for Wedding Albums. You may enter any type of Album you wish (Senior, Baby, Family, Landscape etc.). Physical and digital albums are eligible for PPM Awards.

Don’t forget “Next Generation”. This is designed for friends and family who are under the age of seventeen and have the sponsorship of an active PPM Member. Only $10 per image (“Next Generation” only) to enter. See rules to participate.

Registration MUST be complete for all Physical and Digital entries by 11:00PM on Sunday, March 1st.

NEW for 2020! ACI Lab will be printing an 8x10 of ALL Digital Entries to be displayed in the Print Exhibition and given to the entrants after Photomax.

Physical Entries may not arrive at The Doubletree before Monday, March 2, 2020. Print drop off is Friday March 6th between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM. All Physical Entries MUST be in the print room no later than 1:00 PM on Friday, March 6, 2019. Judging will begin on Friday night at 5:00 pm, and resume Saturday morning at 9:00 am. Prints will be on display after judging through the awards ceremony Sunday evening. Print case pick up is Sunday, March 8th following the awards ceremony. If you need to have your print case shipped back to you please include an additional $25 for shipping and contact me about shipping it back. Please refer to the checklist to make sure that you have not forgotten anything.

Please review thoroughly!

The purpose of this competition is to allow photographers to enter photographic prints, digital files, and/or physical or digital albums to be judged against a standard of excellence using the 12 Elements of a Merit Image. Through this competition, PPM members are also eligible to achieve PPM Awards at the Photomax Awards Ceremony.
These rules pertain to images entered as prints or digital files created by any photographic processes. All entries must be registered at www.printcompetition.com (Entering procedures for printcompetition.com to follow.)

  1. Entrants may submit a case of either print, digital files, physical or digital albums, or a combination for judging. Entrants may enter an unlimited number of entries.
  2. Entrants are required to upload a digital file for each image (print or file) entered. NOTE: For physical print entries, the digital file submitted MUST match both the image and presentation.
  3. No changes to your entry are permitted once the entry deadline has passed. No refunds will be issued after the entry fee is paid.
  4. Judging Procedures – Professional Photographers of America procedures and scoring will be used in this exhibit, except for changes covered within these rules.

ELIGIBILITY

  1. Any PPM member in good standing may enter. PPM members may enter either physical or digital images. Physical prints and digital entries are eligible for PPM Awards. Out of State and Non-Member guests are welcome to enter either physical prints or digital images. (Out of state and Non-Member guests are not eligible for PPM awards).
  2. 2020 Membership dues must be paid and received by the PPM Treasurer one week prior to the PhotoMax event for PPM Members to qualify for PPM Awards.
  3. Entrant must have captured and created the original photographic exposure or exposures.
  4. All processing, manipulation, and printing or rendering were done by the entrant or under their direct supervision.
  5. The entrant has obtained and has access to all necessary releases (model or property) and agrees to hold PPM harmless against all claims and liabilities arising out of PPM's display, publication, and promotion or other use of each image submitted to PPM.
  6. The entrant's name shall not appear anywhere in or on the face of the entry.
  7. No entry will be eligible if it has been made under the supervision of an instructor or as a class assignment. All images submitted must be self-directed. Images created in an educational environment under direct supervision from an instructor are ineligible.
  8. Once an image has been awarded a blue ribbon (score of 80 or above) in any category of PPM competition, it may not be entered again in any other category or PPM competition, at any time, by any entrant. No image that receives a merit may be entered more than once under any condition, including any image from a merited album.
  9. Entries of the same subject in multiple images will be allowed, as long as the images are entirely different concepts.

PHOTOGRAPHIC OPEN COMPETITION CATEGORIES

You must designate one of the below categories for each entry.
Images can portray a subject or subjects from all walks of life and should reflect the personality of the subject(s).

ILLUSTRATIVE

Capturing the beauty of nature, wildlife, industry, and architectural areas are considered illustrative.
  • Landscape/Nature - This description shares joy and adventures while expressing a sense of place. Wild animals in an uncontrolled lighting environment, zoo animals, flowers, seascapes, cityscapes, urban landscapes, and sunsets with or without people can be placed here.
  • Illustrative/Commercial - This is used when images are created for a commercial client to advertise a product and promote a brand or company. This can be an interior or exterior of a structure or within an industrial environment. Illustrative can also be conceptual images that tell a story.

WEDDING

Images can portray a subject or subjects from all aspects of a wedding including traditional portraits, candids or detail work.

ALBUM

SINGLE MAKER ALBUM: Multiple images combined into a digital album collection from one maker.

MULTI‐MAKER ALBUM: Images in the album must be the work of the two entrants, with a minimum of 20 images per entrant. Each entrant must individually enter the competition and pay appropriate entry fees. Multi‐maker albums will be judged as one entry.

NEXT GENERATION (17 and under)
This is designed for friends and family who are under the age of seventeen and have the sponsorship of an active PPM Member. Only $10 per image (“Next Generation” only) to enter. It is a great way to introduce our “Next Generation” to print competition. See rules and entry form to participate.

CREATIVE OPEN NEW FOR 2020!

This category consists of images that have additional photographic elements not created by the maker. All the other PO rules still apply with the exception that an entrant may choose to use photographic elements in the image not created by the maker. These photographic elements must be shown in a guide image. The purpose of this category is to allow makers to enter everyday images that may contain digital backgrounds or other photographic elements not created by the entrant. All necessary releases are required. The jurors will evaluate the entire image, but the photographic elements that were created by the maker must still be merit worthy as well as the overall image. (Please note: there will NOT be a trophy for Creative Open for 2020)

PHYSICAL PRINT ENTRIES

  1. Images may be submitted in any shape and size on a mount board a minimum of 80 square inches to a maximum of 480 square inches, with the largest dimension no longer than 24”.
  2. Print entries must be mounted on a standard mount material (double weight matboard, gator board, ¼” foam, or Sintra). Recommended mounting thickness is 1/8” to 3/8”. “Float” mounting is accepted at the entrant’s risk for damage. Images on metal and mounted to another standard material must have rounded corners and smooth edges. No mount that could potentially damage other entries or pose a danger to print handlers will be accepted. Masonite, glass, stretcher frames, or conventional frames will not be accepted.
  3. No material may be added to the front or back of an entry that may damage another entry.
  4. A digital reference file must be submitted with each entry. This file must match the submitted print entry, both image, and presentation (if a real mat is used on the print, a reasonable facsimile must be used in the digital file). File specifications are the same as under the Digital Submission categories.
  5. If a print is submitted and correctly entered, the print will be judged.
  6. Entry Form and Certification – A signed 2020 Certification Form must be enclosed with your entry. Entries without your signature will not be judged. For Physical Prints identification labels are printed at the time you register online and must be taped to the lower left corner on the back of each print.

DIGITAL IMAGE ENTRIES

  1. Files must be sized, so the longest dimension is 4000 pixels. Each file must contain an embedded color profile of sRGB and be saved at a JPEG quality setting of 10. In most cases, the total file size should not exceed 3.5 MB. Larger files will be accepted when necessary, so long as they are JPG/10.
  2. Files are to be named as Image “Print Title”.JPG No underscores or special characters. (Please refer to PROCEDURES-PRINTCOMPETITION.COM.)

DIGITAL ALBUM ENTRIES

  1. All page/spread files must have the longest file dimension at 4000 pixels, have an embedded color profile of sRGB, and saved at a JPEG quality setting of 10.
  2. Each page/spread file may contain as many images as you desire.
  3. An entry shall contain a minimum of 5 pages/spread files up to 36 pages/spread files.
  4. Files are to be numbered in viewing order using two digits, i.e., 01 jpg, 02 jpg, 03 jpg, etc.
  5. All individual files must be compressed into a single ZIP file. ZIP file must be named: Album Title.zip (e.g., Summer Wedding.zip).
  6. Studio identification or entrant's name cannot appear on any file within the album entry.
  7. MULTI‐MAKER ALBUM: Images in the album must be the work of two entrants, with a minimum of 20 images per entrant. Each entrant must individually enter the competition and pay appropriate entry fees. Multi‐maker albums will be judged as one entry. Each entrant must use the same title when entering a multi‐maker album.
  8. NOTE: Failure to comply with these rules may result in disqualification of the entry.

PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS OF MICHIGAN MASTER ARTIST RULES

The purpose of this competition is to allow the entrant to demonstrate their art skills and expertise. Entries will be judged for digital, artistic, and technical proficiency. Entries can be created using digital or traditional art (such as painting and airbrush) or a combination of both.

These rules pertain to images entered as prints or digital files created by any photographic processes. All entries must be registered at www.printcompetition.com (Entering procedures for printcompetition.com to follow.)

  1. Entrants may submit a case of either print, digital files, physical or digital albums, or a combination for judging. Entrants may enter an unlimited number of entries.
  2. Entrants are required to upload a digital file for each image (print or file) entered. NOTE: For physical print entries, the digital file submitted MUST match both the image and presentation.

If an entry, in the good-faith opinion of the PPM, violates copyright, trademark, or any other applicable law and cannot be proven otherwise, that entry shall be disqualified.
  4. All processing, manipulation, artwork, or rendering must be done by the entrant. Printing may be done under their direct supervision.
  5. The entrant has obtained and has access to all necessary releases (model or property) and agrees to hold PPM harmless against all claims and liabilities arising out of PPM's display, publication, and promotion or other use of each image submitted to PPM.
  6. The entrant's name shall not appear anywhere in or on the face of the entry.
  7. Guide images are required in this category. Guide images must be included on the submitted entry and mounted/included on the face of the entry.
  8. No entry will be eligible if it has been made under the supervision of an instructor or as a class assignment. All images submitted must be self-directed. Images created in an educational environment under direct supervision from an instructor are ineligible.
  9.   2. No multiple volume albums are allowed.
  3. Any studio identification or entrant’s name in the album must be covered.
  4. All entries must be entered online prior to case drop off.  If entering a physical album, you will need to upload a cover image when registering at www.printcompetition.com

DIGITAL ALBUM ENTRY

  1. All page/spread files must have the longest file dimension at 4000 pixels, have an embedded color profile of either sRGB or Adobe RGB1998, and saved at a JPEG quality setting of 10.

NEXT GENERATION RULES

ELIGIBILITY

  1. Next Generation is designed for friends and family who are under the age of seventeen, and have the sponsorship of an active PPM member. It is a great way to introduce our “Next Generation” to print competition.

  2. The entrant will need to follow all print competition rules and pay $10.00 per image submitted. They will not be eligible for “Photographer of the Year” award. They will not be eligible for any awards/drawings other than the Next Generation category. There will be one Best of Show award given as well as a chance to win ribbons on all entries.

  3. If your sponsored child will be participating in the Next Generation competition, please return this form, signed by an active PPM member and your sponsored child. Please include this form with all other forms that you will need for competition.

  1. If you do not have a previous account, click on free registration of new user.  If you have an account, proceed to step
  2. Enter email and create a password.
  3. Choose the organization “PPM” from the list and click on the register button at the bottom.
  4. Verify that your contact information is correct. If it is not correct, make any necessary changes by clicking on the “Change” button at the top of the contact information box. Verify your alert settings and your achievements, make necessary changes.
  5. Look for the PPM logo, and select membership status and first time entering information.
  6. Click on “Create a New Image Entry”.
  7. Enter title name in the box provided.
  8. Select a category.
  9. Select entry type (General or Master Artist). We will be accepting both physical prints and digital submission. PHYSICAL PRINTS AND DIGITAL ENTRIES WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR PPM AWARDS FOR QUALIFYING PPM MEMBERS.. Albums may be physical or digital and both will be eligible for PPM awards. 
  10. Select if your image qualifies for the Lexjet Sunset Award. To qualify for the Lexjet Sunset Award, your entry MUST be a Physical Print and MUST be printed on ANY inkjet paper/media. (Lexjet media is NOT a requirement.)  If your entry qualifies for the Lexjet award, you must place the identifying Lexjet label on the back of the print. Labels are found at www.ppofmi.com under the ‘Print Competition’ tab.  The Lexjet Sunset award will only be given if a minimum number of Physical Prints are entered determined by Lexjet.
  11. Select if your image qualifies for the Fujifilm Masterpiece Award.  To qualify for the Fujifilm Masterpiece, your entry MUST be a Physical Print and MUST be printed on Fujifilm Crystal Archive Paper.  You MUST be able to provide documentation to show it has been printed on Fujifilm Crystal Archive Paper.  A Fuji Masterpiece Award will be awarded (For a qualifying Entries that score above 80) in the Portrait, Wedding and Illustrative Categories. You must place the identifying Fujifilm Masterpiece label on the back of the print.  Labels are found at www.ppofmi.com under the ‘Print Competition’ tab.
  12. SELECT YOUR TOP 4 IMAGES THAT WILL COUNT TOWARDS MICHIGAN’S FOUR FOR FOUR AWARD.  YOU MAY ENTER UNLIMITED ENTRIES, BUT YOU MUST DESIGNATE YOUR TOP FOUR TO COUNT TOWARDS THE FOUR FOR FOUR AWARD. DESIGNATE AN ENTRY BY CLICKING “YES” ON “FOUR FOR FOUR QUALIFIED”. ONLY FOUR ENTRIES MAY BE DESIGNATED FOR THIS AWARD. IF YOU CHOOSE MORE THAN FOUR, YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED FOR THIS AWARD.
  13. Click on “Create a new Entry”. Uploaded files must be sized so the longest dimension is 4,000 pixels (20 inches at 200 ppi).  Each file must contain an embedded color profile of either sRGB and be saved at JPEG quality setting of 10.  Total file size should not exceed 10 MB. Click on the upload image tab and proceed.
  14. Repeat steps 7-13 for each image entry. 
  15. If you are entering a digital album, you must zip your album pages before uploading.

  16. After all images/albums have been submitted and uploaded, click on any “Pay” button or the “pay image fees” button.
  17. Select either “Member” or “Non Member” fee, and enter your total fee: Member is $15 per Entry for UNLIMITED Entries, Non Member is $20 per Entry for UNLIMITED Entries. Enter in payment information and click “Charge Card”.
  18. Print your PPM Entry form by clicking on “Print PPM Entry Form”. This must be printed and included in your case.
  19. To continue printing your individual image labels, click on your browser back button to return to the previous screen. 
  20. Print your individual image labels by clicking on “Print All Back Labels”.
  21. Secure labels to lower left corner on the back of each entry. 
  22. Refer to the rest of the document for additional rules, clarification and forms.

  2. I created, composed and made the original exposure in all categories.
  3. No entry was made under any instructor or in any classroom situation.
  4. I have never received a score of 80 or above on any of these entries in a prior PPM competition.
  5. I have obtained all model releases and hold harmless PPM, PPA, LexJet, Fuji or any of their agents against all claims or liabilities arising out of public display or any reproduction of the entries in this competition.
  6. I assume all liability for damage or loss of entry that I submit for judging.
  7. The entry of any image in this exhibit shall be construed by the association as consent to reproduce in the newsletter or teaching situation.
  8. I understand that all awards presented will be for a calendar year and any advertising or publicity that I promote will contain the year: i.e. 2020 Michigan Photographer of the Year.
  9. I acknowledge that any disputes arising from questions not covered in the rules will be settled by the Exhibition Chair and that the decision will be final.
  10. All information on print labels is correct and true.

PPM Michigan Photographer of the Year*
PPM Award of Excellence
PPM Award of Merit
PPM Top Five Master Photographers (Top Four Entries must total at least 310 points)
PPM Top Five Non-Master Photographers (Top Four Entries must total at least 310 points)
PPM “4 for 4” pin. (Must designate which four images are scored for ‘4 for 4’ and all must score above 80)

If there is a tie for Photographer of the Year, each entrant will receive the award and a trophy. In the event of a tie for Award of Excellence, Award of Merit, Top Five Master and Top Five Non Master, a tiebreaker will be the entrant with the highest scoring image. If there is still a tie after that, the next highest scoring image is used.

Chosen from all Physical Print entries printed on any Inkjet Paper. Chosen by judges and only given if there are at least 150 Physical Prints entered in the entire competition. Trophy will be awarded later from Lexjet if we meet the requirements for the award to be given.

Fuji Masterpiece Award

Chosen from all Physical Print entries printed on Fuji Paper. Chosen by judges in the Portrait, Wedding, and Illustrative categories. Entry must be score above an 80. Trophy will come later from Fuji after required paperwork is filled out and sent.
